2023 AHA/ACC/ACCP/ASPC/NLA/PCNA Guideline for the Management of Patients With Chronic Coronary Disease: A Report of the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Joint Committee on Clinical Practice Guidelines | Circulation

arteriosclerosis treatment :: Article Creator Treatment - STEMI Revascularization PathophysiologyPhysical ExaminationDiagnosisTreatment – Revascularization • Medical TherapyComplications Introduction The most serious form of the acute coronary syndrome, ST segment elevation myocardial infarction, or STEMI, most often results from complete thrombotic occlusion of a major epicardial coronary artery. STEMI is a life-threatening, time-sensitive emergency. Early accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment to restore coronary perfusion, usually by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), are critical to effective management. As the term STEMI implies, the 12-lead ECG shows significant ST segment elevation during STEMI, unlike the ST depressions and ST-T wave changes seen during unstable angina and non-ST segment elevation MI. The Figure below illustrates the ECG during an anterior ST segment elevation MI with "to...

Syncope Clinical Practice Guidelines (ESC, 2018)

The recommendations on the diagnosis and management of syncope were released in June 2018 by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). [ 1 , 2 ] Diagnosis Initial evaluation Key questions Was the event a transient loss of consciousness (TLOC)? If yes, is the origin syncopal or nonsyncopal? In case of suspected syncope, is there a clear etiologic diagnosis? Is there evidence to suggest a high risk of cardiovascular events or death? Emergency department (ED) evaluation of suspected syncopal TLOC Is there a serious underlying cause that can be identified? If the cause is uncertain, what is the risk of a serious outcome? Should the patient be admitted to hospital? Perform immediate bedside/telemetric electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring in high-risk patients when arrhythmic syncope is suspected. Hypertension With Progressive Cerebral Small Vessel Disease Increases Cognitive Impairment Risk - Diagnostic and Interventional Cardiology

January 8, 2019 – Patients with high blood pressure and progression of periventricular white matter hyperintensities showed signs of cognitive impairment despite taking medication to lower their blood pressure, according to new research in the American Heart Association’s journal Hypertension .1 High blood pressure has been linked to an increased risk for dementia, but what’s unclear is what kinds of subtle negative changes take place in the brain that may affect cognitive function. Finding new ways to detect minor types of cognitive impairment may help determine who is at risk for early-stage dementia. In this study , researchers looked at 345 men and women with a median age of 65 who had high blood pressure. Patients underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, were tested in cognitive function areas including execution, memory and attention, and were followed for about four years. Patients’ average blood pressure during follow-up was 144.5/76.5 mm Hg. The American He...

High blood pressure warning: Hidden hypertension signs in your eyes - are you at risk? - Express

High blood pressure is a common condition that puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs. Around 25 per cent of all adults in the UK have the condition, which is also known as hypertension. Spotting high blood pressure symptoms early is crucial, as patients are more at risk of some deadly complications, including heart attacks and strokes. You could be at risk of hypertension if you notice your eyesight has become slightly blurry, it’s been revealed. Blurred vision could be an early warning sign of high blood pressure, warned Bupa. You may be blinking more than usual to try and focus on something specific, or rubbing your eyes to get a clearer view. While it may be caused by simply getting older, or needing to update your prescription at the opticians, it could also be caused by high blood pressure. Problems with your eyes are actually one of the more serious signs of high blood pressure, it warned. “High blood pressure [hypertension] is a serious condition that ca...

Long-Term Riociguat Improves RV Function in Pulmonary Hypertension, CTEPH - Pulmonology Advisor

January 24, 2019 Share this content: After 6 months of riociguat treatment, there were significant decreases in right ventricular thickness tricuspid regurgitation velocity, right atrial area, and right ventricular area. Smaller right heart size and better right ventricular function have been observed in individuals with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) or chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) undergoing long-term riociguat treatment, according to a study recently published in Respiratory Research. This retrospective study included 71 participants, 45% of whom had PAH and 55% of whom had CTEPH . A little more than 50% of the participants were women, the average age was 60, and had taken 1.0 to 2.5 mg of riociguat 3 times daily for 3 to 12 months within the CHEST, Early Access Study, PATENTplus, or PATENT trials. Blinded, offline analysis of echocardiography by investigators took place at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months. The change in right atrial area at 1 year ...

High blood pressure: Foods to cut down on if you want to lower your reading

High blood pressure is difficult to spot because symptoms don’t necessarily always show. To find out if you have high blood pressure the best way is to have your blood pressure checked. Recognising symptoms if they do occur can also help you identify the condition. These include headaches shortness of breath, dizziness and chest pain. One of the best ways to prevent the condition, and to control it, is to cut down on certain foods in your diet. In order to know which foods to cut down on, Blood Pressure UK recommends using the green light code. It explains: “The food traffic lights are always listed in the same order on a food's label: fats, saturated fats, sugar and salt. “The lights also tell you the amounts of the ingredients in 100g or 100ml of the food or in a single serving (if a recommended serving is more than 100g or 100ml). “The amount in a single serving or portion is particularly useful if the food is a ready meal or soft drink where you will be consuming mu...

Opinion: Blood pressure measuring smartwatch is a paradigm shift for hypertension management - MobiHealthNews

About the Author: Dr. Daniel Yazdi is an Internal Medicine Resident at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School interested in the intersection of digital health and clinical medicine. He can be followed on Twitter @DanielYazdi. Watch- ing your blood pressure, pun intended, is about to have a new meaning. Early 2019 marks the release of the first FDA-approved smartwatch blood pressure cuff. Why is this big news? Hypertension affects about 75 million Americans , one out of three adults. It is the leading cause of cardiovascular disease (heart attacks and strokes), resulting in about 1,000 deaths per day. Only 50 percent of patients have their blood pressure adequately managed, demanding a better solution. The watch, HeartGuide , will be released by Omron. It measures blood pressure by inflating the wrist band; a mechanism similar to that of a traditional cuff. Apple also submitted a patent in June 2018 for a similar device,...

Theravance doses first patient in Phase ll trial of ampreloxetine - Drug Development Technology

Theravance Biopharma has dosed the first patient in a Phase III clinical trial investigating the efficacy, safety and tolerability of ampreloxetine (TD-9855) for the treatment of patients with symptomatic neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH). Ampreloxetine is currently being studied as a once-daily norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (NRI) for use in the treatment of patients with symptomatic nOH, a rare disorder characterised by sustained orthostatic fall in systolic blood pressure (SBP) or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) within three minutes of standing. Theravance aims to enrol around 188 patients for the four-week, multi-centre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial. The trial will include patients with symptomatic nOH caused by primary autonomic failure related to multiple system atrophy (MSA), Parkinson’s disease (PD) and pure autonomic failure (PAF). “We recognise a significant opportunity exists for a potentially safe and durable treatment...
