What does it do?UM Health-West Launches Tracking Portal To Increase Supplier Diversity
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — UM Health-West has launched an online portal to help track whether it's doing business with diverse suppliers and vendors.
The program is part of the health system's diversity, equity and inclusion plan, and is designed to encourage an "inclusive" approach to choosing its vendors, suppliers and contractors, according to a news release.
"Inclusion is one of our core values and it's only appropriate to take the same approach when choosing suppliers," Dr. Peter Hahn, UM Health-West president and CEO, said in a statement. "We are dedicated to upholding this principle and ensuring that our suppliers align with our commitment."
UM Health-West works with more than 10,000 vendors, suppliers and contractors. Together, they provide an array of services, from medical supplies and equipment to facility maintenance such as landscaping and electrical services.
Currently, the health system doesn't track how many of those businesses qualify as "diverse" suppliers, officials said.
But the new portal will aim to help UM Health-West do so. To qualify as a diverse supplier, the business must be "51% or more owned, controlled, and operated by people of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, persons with disabilities, persons who are socially and economically disadvantaged, U.S. Military veterans, or women," the health system stated.
"Having a diverse supplier base makes economic sense," Kris Kurtz, the health system's chief operations and finance officer, said in a news release. "It encourages competition to drive costs down and quality up, while also adding incentives for supply chain agility."
Diverse suppliers can add their credentials to the portal, according to a news release. However, the release notes that certification as a diverse supplier is encouraged, but it doesn't guarantee a particular vendor will be hired by UM Health-West.
At this time, there is not a goal for how many diverse suppliers the health system wants to work with on an ongoing basis.
"As the portal is populated and our data accuracy improves, we will then begin to set targets based on our DEI strategic plan moving forward," UM Health-West said in an email.
