High blood pressure - the 10p fruit you should add to your breakfast to avoid hypertension

High blood pressure affects more than 25 per cent of all adults in the UK.

The condition, which is also known as hypertension, puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

Making some diet or lifestyle changes could help to lower your chances of developing high blood pressure.

Eating more bananas is an easy way to slash your hypertension risk, it’s been claimed.

Bananas could have a positive effect on blood pressure as they’re rich in potassium, said Chemist Click pharmacist, Abbas Kanani.

Boosting the amount of potassium in your diet helps to get rid of excess sodium in the body.

Too much sodium - for example, salt - has a negative impact on blood pressure, and could lead to hypertension.

“Foods that contain high levels of potassium should be made part of your daily routine,” said Kanani.

“Potassium helps the kidney get rid of sodium, which can have a positive effect on blood pressure.

“Foods that are typically high in potassium include, leafy greens, bananas and sweet potatoes.

“Before incorporating high levels of potassium in your diet, you should speak to you pharmacist or GP for advice, as there are certain individuals for whom a high potassium diet is not suitable [e.g. those with kidney problems or those taking certain medications such as ACE inhibitors].”

People could also lower their risk of high blood pressure by eating more healthy fats, added the pharmacist. That includes salmon and flaxseed.

Similarly, beetroot contains nutrients that help to reduce blood pressure.

Its nitrates help to relax and dilate blood vessels, meaning blood is able to flow through the body with ease.

Alternatively, try adding more garlic to your diet, as clinical trials have revealed it’s beneficial in maintaining a good overall health, said Kanani.

High blood pressure is often known as ‘the silent killer’, as the only way of knowing if you’re at risk is to have your blood pressure checked.

People that have extremely high blood pressure may have some warning signs of the condition.

Common high blood pressure symptoms include nosebleeds, severe headaches and red eyes.

All adults over 40 years old should check their blood pressure at least every five years.

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist to have your blood pressure checked.
